Guide to Looking Put-Together With Minimal Effort

I am the world’s biggest procrastinator when it comes to getting ready for work in the morning. Or to be honest, for any event, at anytime.

It’s not like I’m super high maintenance or anything, not in the slightest. Give me a three-in-one face cream over an elaborate skin care regime any day. And I literally take two minutes to put on any makeup. How some girls take time to perfectly wing their liner on a daily’ baffles me. Honestly, I have so much respect for anyone who has their life together enough for that kind of effort in the morning. It’s impressive, it’s just not for me.

No, my issue isn’t taking a long time,  my issue is I just never give myself enough time for the basics, and as a result, you can guarantee that I’m probably running late around 99-100% of the time.

This isn’t a recent realisation to me. I’ve been this way for as long as I can remember. Even back when I was in secondary school I remember friends joking about me probably not being ready or arriving on time for anything that we planned. I say they were joking, but it was usually pretty accurate. I know what time I need to get ready but I just would rather do anything else first. Like I said, major procrastinator. I even remember once making up a song with my little sister about how I was running late rather than actually hurrying the fuck up and getting ready (it was in the tune of ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ and truly a musical masterpiece).

Despite the fact that I have always had full knowledge of the fact that there’s a pretty strong chance I won’t allow myself enough time to get ready the following morning, I’ve never really been a night-before outfit planner. I do have a few go-to outfits for work + I’m a pretty big fan of a jumpsuit ( a surefire way to look put together with the least amount of effort involved). Maybe in time, I’ll learn to actually tackle the issue at its source and keep the procrastination to a minimum, but for right now any quick fix will do.

And in winter, a good coat is that quick fix.

Maybe that’s why autumn/winter is my favourite season. Maybe that’s why I have so much joy at the thought of getting out my favourite coats for the first time since spring. You can’t deny the benefits of an oversized coat. Even if I have waited until the last minute to get ready – like, I should be leaving the house but I’m only just putting on underwear kind of last minute – it’s ok. I can still look like I semi have my shit together just by throwing on a long grey coat – even if I’m wearing a coffee stained t-shirt and jeans with a broken zipper underneath. Who needs to know?

Aside from the convenience, I just love how a layered outfit looks.

Investing in a good coat is a yearly ritual for me. I don’t think a year has passed by since I first started earning money that I have picked up at least one new coat. Although some are no longer with me there are plenty that serve me well year-after-year.

So since you know I already have been looking out for potential for this year’s acquisitions, I thought I would share a few picks for my favourites right now (what better way to justify spending hours browsing stores online? “No – I’m not still online shopping, babe. It’s research for a post”)

My go-to is anything long-line or oversized. It’s an easy shortcut to looking like you’ve put the effort into style an outfit. Playing with proportions just gives instant high fashion vibes.

As always I’d love to know if any of these suggestions catch your eye, maybe one will even make it’s way into your wardrobe.
